My horse, who is 5, had been used with the harshest bit her whole life...it makes her really hate the bridle, and there was no need whatsoever to have her on that bit. As soon as i got her, I switched her to a normal snaffle, and she is doing excellent!

IHave29Horses to me the bit you show seems totally unessicary, the twisted bit must be painful, when i look at a bit i try to imagine how i would feel if someone pulled on my mouth with it. Often when our horses don't do as we ask without the need of force or pain it is because we are asking the question wrong (just my opinion) but that bit does look like one of the forceful bits. And to ArabianElements i am glad your horse is much happier in her new bit :) when i first got grenville he was in a waterford gag and he went well in it but it was totally unessicary because he goes just as well in his loose ring snaffle or wit no bit at all!

well ever since i changed charlies bit to a soft rubber snaffle he has been way better...he used to have a "camel head" (aptly named by my uncle) if you took the contact his head went up even tho his bit wasnt that strong, a double jointed loose ring snaffle...now in the rubber bit he takes the contact and works through his back, we even get a lovely amount of foam :) i think sometimes a stronger bit is neccessary, but i would always go softer if i can.

A strong bit is merely a correctional aid and should never be used for any length of time. Similar to the spur, if overused the horse loses response to the bit. If there is the necessity for a strong bit (I never use them I just go back to ground work, but some people cannot avoid it) only use it once, and use it well. Then remove it and see if the lesson has carried through to a snaffle.
