Hi all. Just wanting some advice really...I have just agreed to take on a colt! It was either me or the auction and as he is an 11 month old sweetheart i melted and caved to pressure! Before i can take him he needs to be castrated but im not sure that he is ready...I am having the vet out to have a look, but was wondering if he is not ready and doesnt get cut yet, is he able to make a mare pregnant? He wont actually be in with any mares but they will be in a field very close... Thank you! Emily

Hi Emily He will be capable at 11 months but will probably get the lesson of his life if tries to do the job when mares aren't receptive! You may need to reinforce your fences or think where you put him out! Best wishes HorseVet

Thank you Some one told me that he may be a rig..is this very likely? it hadnt crossed my mind as he is a lovely nature and doesnt seem particularly botherd by very much and is very laid back, much more like a gelding...

I understood that a rig is a gelding that has not been properly castrated; perhaps because they have an 'internal testicle'. I was told if the colts balls don't both drop it can be expensive or impossible to remove them both and this can lead to problems such a the 'rig' and stallion behaviour and or health problems. The young colts I have bought in the past(4 ) have always been checked out in the 'privates' department by a vet to ensure both balls are present for castration. Hope this helps.
