Having recently read The War Horse, I would recommend it - take yourself off to somewhere cosy with a box of kleenex and indulge... It's a great read and so well written, very moving. (I'm looking forward to seeing the stage version too...)

War Horse is excellent! Mr. Morpurgo is such a writer! In an interview, he said that he was inspired to write War Horse because one day he was talking with an older gentleman who had been in WWII and remembered how he had no one to talk to about the awful things happening in the war zone, so he used to stand with his horse and talk to the horse. This man talked for a couple of hours about that, with tears in his eyes, and Mr. Morpurgo knew he wanted to write the story from the horse's point of view (that way, he wouldn't be taking sides but would be able to show that no matter which side people are on, war is terribly sad for everyone).
War Horse has been a stage play for a few years now, and aren't the puppets incredible!? I'd love to ride one! Their makers studied books and films by Monty Roberts, so as to get the actions right. I have seen the puppets on film clips during interviews, etc.; haven't seen the play. I will wait and get a DVD when they come out, won't go to see the movie because I will only sit there and cry unbelievably because horses never have a choice & must go wherever people put them, and who's to say they ever wanted to leave in the first place. This goes for all animals who are given away, sold, etc., for whatever reason. All they know is that things are not the same, and they can't fix them. So, I won't go to the theater for War Horse. When I get to watch it at home, finally I'll get used to it and be able to actually sit and WATCH it. From what I hear, people everywhere who see it, whether play or movie, are in tears, giving standing ovations, so it really hits home, doesn't it. War Horse, the book, is a real keeper. |
