Thanks for the advise, i have been told not to lunge him anymore, i am taking him for walks about 2 times a week, and just giving him lots of fuss lol. his legs seem to be a lot better and he is not wearing the inside of his back feet away, so well pleased.

I have a three year old Welsh cross Appaloosa, she is currently 14 2' with lots of bone, she is ridden once or twice a week for about an hr a time do you think this is okay??? she appears to enjoy this although she does get tired quickly! I dont work her hard it mainly just walking with a few little trots and we cantered for the forst time last week. I would hate to think that im hurting her in any way she s such a lovely lady. |

hi i have had lots of advice , but its all been different, some people say ride him cause he will get to strong , need to teach him now, others say dont cause his bones arnt strong enough. I would not ride him for an hr at a time though, just about 20 mins once a week, Dont do any cantering until she is 4, This is just my opinion, I wish i had the answer. |

Thank you fr your advise! I think I will play it by ear, and see how she goes, I feel by introducing her to lots of different things out on the hack she will become a confident all rounder, however being mindful that she is a baby and keeping things slow and light will not tire her and do damage to her young bones. |

First I would like to say how nice it is to see somebody walking their horse...for young horses it is so much better for them than lunging (the lazy walk)and you can introduce your baby to lots of "scary" things that then won't be so scary when you are on its back...also, great bonding oppurtunity:)
Another good thing for building muscles is a big paddock to run freely in with other horses but that isn't always so easy to attain...hence the hard yards are what your left with...take advantage ...exposure to water, plastic bags in the wind, cars, kids, dogs, etc...is an invaluable asset down the track (hhe, hee) for a sound, socially and mentally adjusted horse that will be a pleasure to ride for many years to come! Keep up the good work!! |
