My Molly took off and dumped me on the road when a motorcycle went by. I had her trainer come ride her a couple days later while my husband drove up and down the road on a motor bike. This seems to have helped but I still am nervous on the road although she is much better. It will take time to regain my trust in her.

nics, do you walk or trot past this hole in the hedge??? it is better that you walk past , this way, your horse can look at the scary gap and overcome his fear... if you have permission, go into the field that is surrounded by that hedge (if there is a field beyond it) and walk him up to it, he can see what is scaring him and he won't have a problem, or go out onto the road on a nice, quiet day, when there isn't a lot of cars (obviously this is impossible to do if it is a busy road, so do the other option) and stand next to the hole with your horse looking at it, he won't be so afraid to walk past it next time, and keep repeating it until he is comfortable with walking past it, hope this helps!!! xoxoxo

hi all i do just walk past it,as such a busy road sometimes traffic can be nightmare, but its one of our fav hacks as takes less than an hour if stuck for time,we arent allowed in the field beyond it,will try options though thanx guys x

Hi Nics. Please be very careful with this. It may help to leg yield your horse past the spot he doesn't like. Flex him away from the hedge, so his head is pointing into the road (flex his whole body, not just his neck). Keep up a very gentle dialogue with him through moving your fingers on the reins. Keep yourself relaxed by relaxing your diaphragm and imagining yourself full of something heavy that's trickling out through your heels. Look where you want to go, not down, at the horse, or at the hole in the hedge. Imagine riding to a point on the horizon and focus on that point. Imagine riding past the spot with everything going exactly as you want. The most important thing is to keep yourself safe: this behaviour on the road does need to be stopped. Kind regards, Caroline.

thankyou caroline another friend at yard has suggested this so will try it next time will let u know how it goes regards nicci i always try and look ahead anyway as its worse if you focus on the hedge yourself itsnt it? same with spooking i dont look for things he might spook at just ignore them and usually sing (silly i know) when out on own,but dec listens usually the wheels on the bus as i have small children lol

I agree try not to anticipate what he is about to do be positive look ahead with confidence and tell yourself he is just going to walk past here like he has the rest of the way, facing his fear is the only way you can really solve a problem like this. I like carolines idea too, flexing his away. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
