We were together before I owned any horses, so he has had to learn a new reality with me. Fortunately, (when our lives changed from living on a yacht together with just a cat) I was quick to encourage him to buy some old wrecked motorbikes to do up - when we had hardly any money for such things. Now that we can afford a few luxuries it has been easier to include horses in our lives. I have owned my mare for 4 years now and he has slowly accepted that more and more of my time (and our money) is being spent on the horses. Happily he does quite like them and even helped me move fields last weekend. However, it has been a long, slow road of gradually increasing my time spent with them, so that he didn't revolt! There have been times when I dreamed of a more horse-friendly spouse! No doubt which I would choose, if it came to the crunch!

i had one just recently that couldn't handle my love for horses and the fact that they came first, that most weekends i was at a show.. He became so snarky when anyone mentioned them.. horses are my life and i dont think i'll let another person in like i did with him until i know he can accept me for me, and my horses as my life..

I had a Boyfriend a few years ago that asked me "If you had to choose between me and your cat who would you choose?" I'd only been with him less than a year, and had my cat for about 14 years, but he was shocked to hear me say i'd pick the cat lol. Our realtionship ended when he insisted that he learn to ride on my brand new, green, 3 year old standardbred, even after i explained why he couldn't. Plus there was the whole thing where he kept trying to include himself in all my hobbies instead of finding his own, "Me Time" was completely alien to him. Now happily single with lots of time to spend riding :D

My Dad wouldn't buy me a horse when I was growing up, although I did get a free lease in my late teens (horse in profile pic). My husband is into motorbikes, and when he wanted another one, he knew he had to buy me a horse first. It works well, because both our hobbies take up around the same amount of time and would cost roughly the same amount. He does complain when I start to spend too much time with the horse, and this normally happens when daylight saving time starts in summer. So, I've learned to ride after lunch, and that way the sunset sends me home. Otherise I'll spend the whole day at the stables helping out. If he asked me whether it would be him or the horse, I'd turn around and ask him if it would be me or the bikes LOL.
