my previous pony was a newforest, one of the best ponies I have ever owned, she was quite chunky & only 13.3hh but carried my 10 & half stone easily.

can anyone guess what I'm going to say? HIGHLANDS! being scottish they are the native breed along with the shetland, both of which I adore. Many people look at a highland and think they aren't capable of jump or are lazy plods, but they are as versatile as they come. He is 13.3hh, lots of bone and capable of jumping 3ft3 (maybe more if I wasn't such a wimp:D) He carries me 10 stone 5ft8 no problems round anything I ask. Ooh and did i mention their super duper character:D I love everything about them and I don't think I will be without a highland from now on:)

Natives of all sorts have such endearing temperaments!! When I turned out my rising 4 Connemara mare today, she strolled off through a rough patch & immediately got a HUGE loose bramble caught in her tail. An alarming double-quick circuit of the field at gallop followed, with her alternating gallop strides with handstands to lash out at the adherent devil with both barrels. I stood & watched. She came to a screeching stop, walked up, presented her bum, & stood stock still to have the offending item removed, which took me 5 mins & a few thorns in the hands!!

I loved that description NMH, typical native! They are certainly not daft!

I have a Dartmoor and a few Shetlands. The Dartmoor is smart, even a little too much, as he has learnt to unclip the ropes on his halter so he can go off for a little wander. He was very easy to educate for harness, his trainer just loved working with him, and would never turn back another to educate. I love the cheekiness of the Shetland, that sassy look through the forelock that they have. It's so distinctive of the breed.
