Recently I read The Horse Boy... very interesting.I found a book on Amazon: Special Needs, Special Horses,by Naomi Scott.I love this book.It has lots of photos and the experiences of many, many therapeutic riding students of all ages. Many types of disabilities are included---autism is one. The book is fascinating.Another" Horses That Save Lives by Cheryl Dudley.25 horses/25 differently abled riders.I love THIS book too. One horse is from "Equest Maine", where I did a lot of research for my middle grade novel featuring therapeutic riding. This book, too, came from Amazon.com; many great photos to go with all of these first-hand experiences. Both books are written with adult readers in mind. Two adult novels about horses, by Joyce Stranger, are:Breed Of Giants (Shires. The folks who raise them are facing economic problems in keeping the farm going...and Zara: Again, a farm, the problems of keeping it together, and a blind Arabian mare, Zara. Have had these for years, on my Favorites Shelf. You're right, we do need more grownup horse fiction. When Mary O'Hara wrote her trilogy, it was for adults. Now you almost never find Thunderhead or Green Grass of Wyoming---while My Friend Flicka is in the young adult (if not younger)section.I'll look for the Silver Brumby books. Just thought of another, written for adults I should think: Horses In the Green Valley, by Vian Smith. Also, James Aldridge's 'A Sporting Proposition' is probably for middle graders by now, but still is a really good story that keeps you wondering until the end. OH. 1 more. Read 'Seabiscuit' by Laura Hillenbrand. It's fast-paced, and true, and I couldn't put it down. I like Horse Heaven. Also I like Horse People by Michael Korda, very well written. Finally, I'm done. I haven't been on this site for awhile, but now will be back from time to time. I love reading everyone's posts.
