I find when a horse is acting up it helps to try to promote the bond you have with him/her...give positive reinforsement with actions you want to promote...ignore bad behavior or you could possibly make it worse...good luck...sometimes it takes time.

Glad to see the Fei outlawed Hyperflexion and the princess accepted the 41,000 signature petition.A small win for the horses,and i'm sure more could be done.

that's really interesting. You know what, maybe he knows you're not feeling very confident and is actually looking after you. It never ceases to amaze me how horses pick up on our energy. Have you put anything on the confident riding group? On the other hand are you sure he is feeling 100%. He doesn't seem unwell or his back isn't sore? I would do some freeschooling and observe how he moves when you're not on his back. This also might be a good time to get him moving forward a bit better. Is he pretty unfit?

Hi lancslady how about training him to your voice? I talk to my mare when I ride her and she really listens to me. I only use minimal leg. This may help!

ive just bought an 8yr old pie bold thats dead to the leg/crop. i lost my conidence in a life treathing accident, so im wary to say the least, but.... hes soooooooooooo lazy, which i dont mind to much but my legs are killing me, any suggestions

hi all..i train horses for circus and tv work...they work liberty and ridden..its great fun and am always experimenting what i can teach them next and how...as i like to use my own methods...

I have always worked with horses on both sides & mount & dismount,lead etc and my horses are never spooky either way

hi ive been training younsters for years the best ever is the myler low port comfort snaffle ive ridden everything frm youngsters 2 ex eventers and hav all gone well in it try treacle on the bit it wrks

hi our other horse didnt like a metal bit at all,we had his teeth checked which were fine so we had a happy mouth bit lent to us to try.It worked very well so we bought our own,so maybe your horse doesnt like the metal as suggested by someone else.try one of these it might make a difference.

This is for Georgiexpony and the problem she is having with her horse. Sounds daft but have you checked your tack, is your girth too tight or your bridle? When he bolts pull quite firmly on one rein, his head has to turn and horses can't run on with their head turned to either the left or right. Is your saddle ok, bolting can mean they are trying to get away from pain etc. Don't do too many bit changes it won't fix the problem , you need to find out why he's doing it. Before you go out to ride, try lounging or long reining. Have you had his teeth and back checked ? If it were me I wouldn't hack out until you have him back under control. I had a horse who bolted along a main road, it was only the fact that I broke him in and used vocal commands did we survive !!! So be careful . Lydia

Hi Georgiexpony I seriously think you need to get to the root of why he is bolting. That's a dangerous situation as bolting is 'out of control' and running blindly. I am no expert but personally I would not be putting him in canter at the moment until you get to the root cause. don't put yourself at risk, see if you can get some professional advice. Horses usually bolt for a reason and it's their flight relex. Good luck and stay careful!

I Need Some Help. My Horse Casper, has a serious bolting problem. He will go into walk and trot, but when i ask for canter, he will go into canter then bolt of. I know this is because he gets excited, but it is getting out of hand? I've tryed bringing him back and putting him back in the stable, so he thinks whenever he bolts he goes back but it just doesn't seam to work. Then I've tryed different bits and still, he bolts. I know he may be a abit headstrong, but I don't know what to do? Do you have any ideas?

i do allsorts, i train and back and break most horses/ponies that come into my yard, i have just started uni though so have had to stop. So far i have backed around 35 horses and ponies, and schooled an uncountable amount... if anyone wants any advise on any problems they are having, me and my sister also run a problem horse re-habilitation yard so message me and i'll give you all the advise i can!! I have gained a lot from watching/ working with Mark Rashid and Kathleen Lindley, one of the things from Kathleen that has really stuck with me has been to train not just so the horse does what you ask, but does what you ask AND is relaxed about it. Thought I would post this note because there is an interesting/complimentary horse training clinic in Norfolk this weekend at the World Horse Welfare. It is on conflict free training and is called "If Horses could Talk". Further details are on the blog in the TV section.
